Our First Baby | First 6 weeks home together

Our first Baby, we survived the pregnancy, numerous regular doctor visits, ultra sounds (do you want to know the sex of your Baby), the first heart beat we heard, the classes we took in order to become educated parents, then the delivery, and home we go all three of us. After nine months of waiting, with some fears and worries.

We made it. Our First Baby | First 6 weeks home together

Mom is exhausted, I am what? For some the First 6 weeks home together of having your first child is even a greater education, challenge, then all the books, websites, doctors advice read and reviewed for 9 months. All of that appeared to be a waste of time once our little girl arrived home.

The babies room was all setup, safe toys, best crib, bottles, breast pump, diaper bin, diapers, wipes for those smelly first Diaper changes, bathing table, and on and on and on. We were totally prepared. Well we thought so??

We quickly realized that sleep for us not the baby was not to be something we had any for the first 6 weeks. Breast feeding was one challenge, as our little girl while in mother was very active at night. Now out in the real world her schedule remained that of a night owl.

Breast feeding at first for mother and daughter was a game of play with Moms’ breasts, and sometimes not so much feeding. Mom’s breasts hurt as milk flowed in and Baby played. The breast pump was also kind of like this strange device. Store the milk, warm the milk to the right temperature. All for not our little girl likes Mom’s breast, not this bottle thing. At first.

Our First Baby

Our First Baby | First 6 weeks home together

The Babies room for the most part was abandoned during the first long nights and weeks. Feed her and she would roll over and fall asleep in our bed. Which also allowed us those fleeting few hours of rest during the evenings. Then the fear of “we will roll over on her” did not help at first.

We were told all about getting your baby on a routine will help. Acclimating her to days not nights. Easier said then done.

Having a Baby in 1990 vs. Today

Having a Baby in 1990 vs. Today.

The Fashion-

1990- Maternity fashion was ugly, but totally OK. It was almost expected to wear huge billowy, flowery dresses and giant blowsy tops paired with black maternity stirrup pants. If the bump showed, it was too tight, moms had to find bigger clothes. Bathing suits were like dresses, also ugly. On the weekends we sported overalls and jumpsuits. Also very très chic.

Today pregnant moms look so fashionable. Lululemon clothes are a staple, stretchy tops and knit dresses outlining the baby bump is everywhere. Bikinis and bare bellies are on every beach and pool deck.

Having a baby in 1990 vs. today.

Information- Having a Baby in 1990 vs. Today.

1990- The 1984 book, What to Expect When You’re Expecting was on every coffee table of any pregnant woman in America with updated versions sold every year. A month to month guide on what the baby looked like, how mom should be feeling; new aches and pains and what was normal.

Today, internet blogs, Facebook groups and classes are how today’s modern mom learn every detail of what’s going on with them. There is a lot more information shared today than 20+ years ago.

Boy or Girl- Having a Baby in 1990 vs. Today.

1990- The only way to know the gender of the baby was if moms had an amniocentesis. Typically a bad AFP (Alfa-Fetoprotein Test) indicating either Downs Syndrome or spinal bifida would prompt many to risk the scary test for diagnostic proof, which would also indicate the sex of the baby.

Today non-invasive prenatal baby gender test on maternal blood can detect the Y-chromosome. So at 10 weeks gestation and for $300, parents can have the test done and in a week they know if it’s a boy or girl.

Maternity Leave – Having a Baby in 1990 vs. Today.

1990- Everyone would get a note from the Dr. about 2 weeks before the due date that orders moms to leave work within in a few days. That’s it!! Moms would just abruptly leave. Although, everyone would expect it and all male bosses would be relieved since they would be so uncomfortable around pregnant moms and their bellies. Moms would be put on short-term disability, not losing any of their vacation days, sick days or maternity leave; meanwhile they were home decorating the baby’s room and, albeit, lumbering around, but still having a leisurely vacation close to home.

Nowadays there are restrictions with insurance plans and more so the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993, (although was not implemented until 1998) FMLA was intended “to balance the demands of the workplace with the needs of families.” If eligible, employees could take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid leave during any 12-month period for pregnancy (among other things) and to care for a newborn child. So, no more unnecessary bogus doctors notes to leave for no reason.

Moms now work up until the day they deliver. NO more “free” days off. But, now dads get time off which didn’t exist before. Most dads just took vacation time.

Delivery- Having a Baby in 1990 vs. Today.

1990- Moms would be permitted to go up to 3 weeks beyond the due date. I did with one of my kids and I was home for 5 weeks on short term disability. Awesome for me! Moms would have to pay extra to have a private room on the maternity floor. Only 1 hospital had all private rooms in my area. Moms would give birth in one room then move to the maternity floor, usually a few floors down.

Today- 1 week late is the limit. At the 39-week visit at the doctor, the plans will be made for an induction or scheduled C- section. Now, all hospitals have private rooms. Most moms also deliver in the room they will stay in for the 3 days if vaginal delivery or 5 if Caesarian section.

Boston Newborn Care Frequently Asked Questions

Boston Newborn Care Frequently Asked Questions

1990- The maternity photos were hideous. It was a mug shot for the file at the hospital. The fluorescent lighting in a small room with a camera on the ceiling made for a great shot. Parents did get the option of buying it, which for the most part, they did and they were all so ugly. Babes were in a hospital undershirt wrapped in a hospital blanket, goop in their eyes looking unrelated to anyone in their family, (or anyone’s family.)

Today, photographers are waiting for those that choose to have a photo session of the baby. The use of softer lighting, cute baby outfits, natural positions that are scheduled make for much better pics. Some with parents, some solo, all are precious. Not to mention that the IPhone cameras are better than anything moms of yesteryear had in their to-go bags.

Traveling Nanny From Boston Newborn

Traveling Nanny From Boston Newborn Care for Families Traveling

Traveling Nanny From Boston Newborn Care for Families Traveling . For years I have received calls from parents planning vacations in Boston looking for overnight support with their newborn(s).

Traveling Nanny From Boston Newborn Care for Families Traveling

Boston Newborn Care provides a traveling nanny, Newborn Care Specialist or infant nanny. They are the overnight support, the daytime help and the professional in the house person, keeping things on track and empowering new moms and dads every step of the way. While parents are out enjoying some vacation no matter the city Boston Newborn Care provides a traveling nanny.

Traveling Nanny

Traveling Nanny

Many moms can’t imagine spending weeks with their mothers (or vice versa). So many families are turning to 24/7 traveling nanny services from Boston Newborn Care Specialists who are more than willing to help during your vacations or business travel.

Traveling Nanny From Boston Newborn

The majority of my clients are in the Metropolitan Boston or New York City areas. However the network of traveling nanny nurses I have at my fingertips can accommodate any location in or out of the U.S.

At Boston Newborn Care, we make a point of screening and training our traveling nanny specialists (many are RN’s, and LPN’s) to not only know all the latest trends in baby gear and AAP practices but to take a course in working within homes as a service provider. Lets face it, it really doesn’t matter how great they swaddle or their awesome tricks of settling a baby if they cant give the family space when needed.

Traveling Nanny

Travel Nannies

A 24/7 traveling nanny sleeps when the baby sleeps, gets 4 hours off during the day for more rest and time to catch-up on personal item’s: emails, phone calls, showering etc. They are not recovering from a birth or a C-section.

They are not nursing, running your household or going to work. They eat when you eat, attend to your needs for the duration of the contract. A great perk is that there is support for when things need to be tweaked or if help is needed.

Most 24/7 traveling nanny Newborn Care Specialist will work a minimum of 1 week to 1 year. All have all vaccinations, passports ready, and they know how to help a busy family vacationing all over the world or organizing a low-key family that’s hunkered down during the first few months with the baby.

They travel to you or with you. The culture of each family is different. We recognize that and cultivate our ways to match your style.

Live Streaming

Video Alerts

If something happens at home, your video solution should be able to instantly alert you. A good connected camera will detect motion, begin recording, and send you an alert or email with the video clip so you can see what’s going on.

Smart Clips and Other Smart Features

When your video camera is part of a multi-sensor smart home, your video monitoring becomes smarter and more convenient.

For example, you don’t want an alert for everything – so you can customize what triggers an alert. Contractors arriving or kids coming home? Yes please – your camera will use the door code or alarm panel as the trigger to record. Dog getting up to look out of the window? No alert necessary. It’s your home, so you make the rules.

You can even use your location as a trigger for complete control over your video solution. Alarm.com’s Geo-Services lets you pause recording when you’re at home, and start again when you leave, all based on your smartphone’s location.

Weatherproofing and Wall-Mounting

Many of the events you’ll want to monitor for – particularly security-type events – take place outside your home, where most connected cameras are susceptible to weather and connectivity issues. Here, you need an solution like Alarm.com’s new outdoor wireless camera.

Our new camera features a sleeker design, improved durability, and a high outdoor weather rating, meaning that it captures everything no matter what the weather: ice, rain or humidity. Best of all, a trained security professional can install this camera for you, taking care of mounting, wiring and connectivity while you stay warm indoors.

Boston Baby Specialists Cradle Cap

Boston Baby Specialists Cradle Cap, I learned the importance of educating parents on their newborns’ appearance early on in my career. One postpartum nurse told me that she would run ragged throughout the night going from room to room answering questions about their baby’s skin, head shape, bent limbs, and lack of eyebrows.

Of course newborns are typically in the hospital for 2-5 days and not much changes in their appearance. The transformation from newborn to cute cherubic, picture perfect baby is quite astounding and as it seems, not all that well known among new parents. Cradle cap is a delightful little condition that happens to most infants to varying degrees. When I say varying degrees, I mean it can be so mild that parents are not aware, or it is so severe that it spreads beyond the baby’s head and onto her face.

One mom called me in a panic when she learned that the rash on her baby’s face, and across her eyebrows was in fact cradle cap! Not everyone knows that it is not limited to the scalp. Common signs of cradle cap include, patchy scaling or thick crusts on the scalp, greasy skin covered with flaky white or yellow scales, skin flakes, and possibly mild redness. Similar scales may also be present on the ears, eyelids, nose and groin. Do see your doctor if the patches spread to your baby’s face or body.

Boston Baby Specialists Cradle Cap

Cradle cap usually resolves on its own within a few months. Self-care measures, such as washing your baby’s scalp daily with a mild shampoo, can help loosen and remove the cradle cap scales. Gently rub your baby’s scalp with your fingers or washcloth to loosen the scales. I also see more often than not, a blotchy scalp as a result of mom picking at it! Wash your baby’s hair once a day with mild baby shampoo. Loosen the scales with a small, soft-bristled brush before rinsing off the shampoo. If the scales don’t loosen easily, rub petroleum jelly or a few drops of mineral oil onto your baby’s scalp. Let it soak into the scales for a few minutes, and then brush and shampoo your baby’s hair as usual. If you leave the oil in your baby’s hair, the scales may accumulate and worsen the cradle cap. Once the scales are gone, wash your baby’s hair every few days with a mild shampoo to prevent scale buildup. If cradle cap persists or seems severe, your doctor may suggest a medicated shampoo, lotion or other treatment.

Boston Baby Specialists Cradle cap is most common in newborns. It isn’t contagious and probably won’t bother your baby. Cradle cap generally isn’t itchy for infants.

Though the exact cause of cradle cap isn’t known, one contributing factor may be hormones that pass from the mother to the baby before birth. These hormones can cause an abnormal production of oil (sebum) in the oil glands and hair follicles.

Cradle cap is sometimes confused with another skin condition, infantile eczema. One major difference between these conditions, however, is that eczema usually causes significant itching.

It will pass, usually just in time for baby acne to appear. Don’t cancel the photo op however. Its who they are at the time and can be a memory that will make you smile years later when they are all grown up.

Boston Newborn Care Bottle Tip “Mixie Bottle”

Boston Newborn Care Bottle Tip “Mixie Bottle”. Have you ever heard of it? It’s a brilliant way to be on the go with a bottle at the ready. Getting out of the house with a newborn is a feat among itself. Gone are the days where you have to just tuck your phone into your pocket and dash.

Now there’s the checklist.

Diapers, toys, change of clothes for baby, change of shirt for mom (annoying headlight spots on your shirt from leaking breast milk isn’t especially attractive) The diaper bag with favorite toys, loveys, blankets. Etc. etc. etc.

Now the chore of the bottle: Although your breastfeeding days are still in full swing, perhaps you are supplementing with some formula in anticipation of going back to work, or just because you want to introduce formula to your babe.

Boston Newborn Care Bottle Tip "Mixie Bottle"

Boston Newborn Care Bottle Tip “Mixie Bottle”

Now the questions:

Do I make it ahead of time and then search for a coffee shop where I can get a hot cup of water to warm it in? Do I bring the water separately and the powder in a different container to mix it on the go.

Holding an infant, trying not to touch any surface outside of your house and mix it without being one of those new moms who fumbles and spills?

Boston Newborn Care Bottle Tip “Mixie Bottle

The chamber has the perfect amount of formula, the water is the perfect temp. Push the bottom of the chamber; the powder is released into the water. And you have the perfect bottle with no struggle.

You can load up your stroller or your diaper bag with ready to go bottles so you are never stuck struggling in the ladies room in a full sweat with a hungry baby.

Here is one tip. The bottle can leak a little bit from the top if it is screwed on too tight. The pressure from the release of the formula somehow causes the nipple to be a little off where it attaches to the bottle collar.

Just don’t tighten it too much and you’ll have no issues. The wide Dr. brown nipples fit on this bottle as well.

Mixie Bottle Fill, Pop, Mix for the freshest bottle on the go.

Having a Successful Boston Newborn Experience?

The upward trend in Boston Baby Nurses, Newborn Care Specialists and Infant Overnight Care in Boston is due to success of the parents.

Lets face it; we have a city of really successful parents. Smart, talented and dedicated people who surround themselves with smart talented and dedicated help.

It’s not by accident that couples move to Boston. In Beacon Hill, Back Bay, South End, Southie and the Seaport you will find like-minded, smart, folks who work hard, and have nice things.

They worked hard at school, are dedicated to their job, their trade, their skill. They put in the time to be a success. Long hours, missed vacations and long weekends at work so they are where they are; they earned their spot as the impressive head of the department, top sales person or savvy entrepreneur.

This didn’t happen overnight. Today most women are ready to have a baby after sometimes up to 10 years after they graduate from college.

Having a successful Boston Newborn experiences?

Having a successful Boston Newborn experiences?

The average age of first time moms in 2000 was 24 years old. Today’s moms are still in school or seeking a career until they are closer to 30. Medical professionals are in their early 30s before they can even consider having a baby.

Not only are first time moms older, but also so is the support system around them.

I am the 3rd born in my family and my mom was 24 when she had me.

I was 25 when my first son was born. At the time my mother was 49 years old and my dad was 50. They were my support system. My dad brought me to Dr’s appointments and my mom put the nursery together, she was my Florence Nightingale, my Mary Poppins and came to support me in the middle of the night.

Today, many first time moms are in their 30’s and 40’s. Having grandparents as support, be it in the early days of chaos or when moms go back to work, just doesn’t seem to be the best option.

Not to mention the fact that many in the Boston area are not from here originally. So grandparents are not next door anymore. Hiring help is the way of the world now.

Don’t get me wrong, grandparents are still very much part of the mix. They come to stay for a few days and definitely help all day. They just do not do the overnight shift. They go to bed at 9 P.M. I usually have a nice chat with them at

6 A.M. when they get up to let the new mom get some more sleep.

Hiring a Boston Night Nurse for Your Newborn

Hiring a Boston Night Nurse for Your Newborn. Boston is a popular area for baby nurses. I get that I live this world, but it is always astounding to me that folks have never heard of a night nurse or a baby nurse that support families when an infant (or two or three) joins the family.   Or maybe it is something they have seen in TV but feel that this is just a service for the rich and famous.

SOOO not true.

First of all, parents are not expected to know the specific industry terms.  The “industry” consists of nannies and agencies that are trying to outline the different roles.  Parents who need support will search for whatever term they think is most likely going to yield the best candidate.

So, be it a night nanny, newborn care specialist, maternity nurse, overnight nanny or baby nurse or whatever you want to call it,  were here to help.

In a recent article I read, parents lose an average of six months of sleep in the first two years of their child’s life.

Boston Night Nurse

Yikes, that’s a pretty big sleep debt.

Like many things in life, the amount of sleep, where you sleep, the conditions in which you sleep is important to many.  It’s an area in life that most don’t mess with.

Aside from fuzzy brain, forgetfulness, and appearing like a space cadet there are many serious ramifications to being up all night going to bed.

Migraines, seizures, and wakening some dormant condition due to lack of sleep.

Just like many other things, perhaps sleep is worth the price to pay to get it.

I once had a client who said, “I’m young, I can always make money, I just don’t want to be miserable in what is supposed to be an awesome time in my life”

Another client was so thrilled with being referred to me, she said ”I’m going to bed, I’ll just leave a suitcase full of cash by the door”  Another said she would have written a blank check had she known about this service.

There is a short-term expense to this service Boston Night Nurse.  But it’s just a short time.  Not always a sustainable outlay for years, but most feel it’s worth it for a few months. You decide the time frame, the hours and the bonus tasks performed while you are dreaming away.

I’m from a customer service background.  It’s important to me to only present professional, experienced legitimate baby nurses to my clients.

Word of advice.  Google them.

If you see articles about the newborn care specialist you are planning on with another career, you may want to reconsider.  Don’t you just want a passionate professional?  Not a sales rep or a hospital translator.

Just sayin…Boston Night Nurse
