If You Do Something Once With Your Newborn

If you do something once with your newborn, prepare to do it for a year. It’s always so hard to try to figure out what works and what doesn’t work when your baby isn’t content. Parents with infants will agree that they will do almost anything to get their newborn baby to sleep and to stop crying.

Seriously; ANYTHING.

A ride in the car, bouncing up and down on an exercise ball, a vibrating chair, the swing, extra loud white noise; the list is endless and sometimes outrageous.

One of the problems is that parents want immediate results; they want a quiet, cooing, sleepy or asleep child before they can move on with their lives, before they can take a breath, brush their teeth, or sleep themselves.

So they of course feed and change diapers and if they are not then met with the milk drunk-like sleepy baby they start with their options. try the ball, nope, not it,

Move to the seat on the washing machine (OK so I’m dating myself, chairs now are battery operated and vibrate, however 24 years ago that wasn’t the case)they swaddle, un-swaddle, crib, rock and play, up, down, whatever it takes.

Finally the baby falls asleep on their chest.

So nobody move!

Mom will lie quietly staring at the still screen on the tv that appears after pausing the on-demand show for too long. The remote is too far away.

No shower, the breakfast dishes that are piled on top of dinner dishes will wait, text with left hand since that’s where the phone is, phone may die, cant plug it in, too far away, trapped.

But! Success! The baby slept. From now on the day is centered around the naps that the baby takes on a person. Overnight newborn sleep will be in the chair, in the living room or the babys nursery.

Two reasonable educated successful adults will agree with the new plan.

Their lives take on a new focus. How to factor in that one of the parents will have to be still so the baby can sleep on them. That’s a habit that will remain until the child decides that a nice soft comfy mattress is better than a lumpy human. For about a year.

Don’t cough, have too much water or have any other children in the mix.I get it, we all do, but, maybe give a more reasonable option a minute before moving on to the next. Amazing how much you still can’t get done without a baby on your chest.

Things no one told me about Newborn Care

Why didn’t anyone tell me any of this, no one told me about Newborn Care?

Choosing Newborn Care in Boston is personal

Choosing Newborn Care in Boston is personal. This comes with such questions like Safety? Location? Hours? Price? and Flexibility? These can be confusing choices for first time parents

First Parents need to identify the categories of Choosing Newborn Care in Boston.

Daycare Center – Centers like KinderCare, Next Generation Child Care Centers, The Goddard School and Bright Horizons are located in most cities and towns. There are also many private centers-located in churches and community centers, which are run in a similar fashion.

Private, In-home Day Care – Home based day care centers, mainly in more suburban locations in most towns. They are located in designated areas in private homes operated by a licensed day care provider.

Private Nannies- Professional care providers with educational training, credentials, references, years of experience and local knowledge of child rearing resources and child friendly activities.

Au Pairs- Can come over 60 countries, Au Pairs come to the US for one – two years on a J1 learning visa and they come with stringent background checks. Plus parents are provided with local coordinators to assist the families with working with Au Pairs.

So parents now need to decide how to choose from these options.

Corporate Facilities; Those in designated buildings: school-like environment, with florescent lighting and industrial furniture, secure entrances and exits. These are more regulated; there are more eyes on your child. Report cards and progress reports- there are more checks and balances.

Choosing Newborn Care

Home based Centers; More cozy outfits with the nice lady down the street who bakes cookies and encourages the kiddos to come in PJ’s and their favorite lovey. Less structured, however the rules and regulations are in place, just a softer touch. Ratio of provider to child is strictly enforced here as well.

Nanny’s; The kids are in their own home, with their own things; napping in their own crib. No need to pack up the kids on those cold and snowy days. They get to stay in their nice cozy and warm bed. A huge perk is that there is an adult in your home to bring in the mail, meet a delivery, and take care of the children’s laundry, their food prep and their toys.

Live-In Au pair: Structured to be like a family member who can immerse a new language and culture to the children’s life. She lives there, knows the house as her own. Encouraged by the family to get a good a nights sleep and maintain a wholesome girl-next-door persona and become part of the family

I remember making these choices when my kids were small. I tested out each option because I couldn’t make the decision. Parenting isn’t as easy as you may think. The choices are endless and the worrying constant. But understand that we all get through it and find solutions for your most important priority, your child…..
